He administers the Ashen Ledger — the basalt spire in the City of Brass where contracts, legal records, and infernal property are kept — and he does so with the absolute confidence of someone who has never needed to lose.
He entered the picture in session 43, when Vladyn explained that the sigil of ownership over the seventh layer was stored in the Ashen Ledger. The sigil was not just valuable. It was the ceremonial proof of Vladyn’s right to rule, granted when he overthrew Mephistopheles. Getting it required dealing with Choroziel, which required getting past everything the Ashen Ledger was built to prevent.
The party’s first attempt at the Ledger — a bluffed inspection routine that fell apart almost immediately, paperwork blowing into lava, Rae getting restrained — turned into a fast escape with warrants issued against the entire group. Their second attempt worked precisely because they abandoned all dignity and committed fully to a cover story involving a fake baby, a baptism of fire registration, and an increasingly elaborate infernal family disguise. The absurdity of it was what made it work.
Inside the Ledger, they found the vault’s dual-lock system, identified Charles Elred as the keeper of both stones, manipulated access through improvised bureaucratic chaos, and eventually got Nucky into the vault and out with the target scroll — altered to state that Vladyn owed Zarnak a favor before the vault door snapped shut behind him.
Choroziel attempted to reclaim his authority over the Ledger during the escape. It did not go the way he planned. The party got out. The document went with them.
