History & Role

Known as Qal — pronounced “Kal.”

Former Life

Qalifar Driik was in life a skilled Drow assassin from the city of Szithlin, deep in the Underdark beneath Misledale in the Dalelands of Faerun. He was a follower of Lolth and very good at his work — not famous, not notorious, just quietly excellent at a profession that rewards excellence quietly. He never drew more attention than a job required.

His final contract was an attempt to assassinate Johan Bata, a member of the ruling council of the city of Mulmaster. The attempt failed. He was killed. For a long time, the blame was placed on a fellow follower of Lolth named Elerra Dalael, believed to have betrayed him. The truth, discovered later, was that the true hand behind his death was Artemis Entreri — the renowned assassin and long-standing rival of Drizzt Do’Urden.

Death and Rebirth

After an unknown passage of time, Qalifar woke on a small wooden bed in a simple shack with nothing from his former life — only simple clothes and a single image burning in his mind: a strange, powerful, spider-shaped dagger.

The shack belonged to Ara Varel, an old elven woman and follower of Torm. She told him he had been brought back to fulfill a task but could not tell him what the task was, who had assigned it, or who had restored him to life. She had received a dream — instructions to prepare for his arrival — and a tenday later, he had arrived. The message had not felt like it came from Torm directly, but it had come through him.

He was a revenant, though he did not yet understand that. What he understood was this: he was no longer bound to the trappings of his Drow heritage. The compulsion toward evil was gone. In its place was something unexpected — a sense of freedom, even knowing that an unknown purpose had claimed him before he had a chance to choose one for himself. The dagger burned in his memory. He set out to find it.

The Journey

The dagger was real. It was his: Qal’s Inescapable Dagger, spider-shaped, bound to his soul in ways he came to understand over years of pursuit. He found it. He found companions. And somewhere along that road, he began to sense the presence of Amaunator — the eternal sun — watching over him.

The teachings of Amaunator weighed on him, pressing against everything his former life had been built on. He did not resist. He let them reshape him. By the end of Campaign 2 he had become a champion of both Amaunator and the Raven Queen — the latter having been the power that returned him to life, a fact he only came to fully understand through the events that followed. His name was remembered in the places he passed through as someone who had risen from death and chosen something better than what killed him.

The End of Campaign 2

The final reckoning of his Campaign 2 story came with Johan Bata. Johan had not stopped wanting the dagger. He had been pursuing a ritual, and the spider-shaped blade was central to completing it. Worse, Johan had discovered a method of using soul coins — objects bound to specific souls — to temporarily inhabit the bodies of those the coins were tied to. He could do this once per coin. The practice was abhorrent to the Raven Queen. It was also, Qalifar eventually learned, precisely how Johan had arranged his original death.

That was why the Raven Queen had brought him back. His mandate: find the dagger, end any possibility of the ritual completing, and eliminate everyone who knew about it.

He thwarted Johan. The ritual did not complete.

But Artemis Entreri still held Qal’s soul coin — and Entreri knew how to use it. Confronted with that leverage, Qal struck a deal: he would help Entreri at a future date of Entreri’s choosing. In exchange, Entreri would not use the coin against him, and when the obligation was fulfilled, he would return it.

The Bridge to Campaign 3

The debt to Entreri came due. The future task Entreri had in mind involved the Nihil Shard — an object of tremendous and dangerous power that Entreri intended to possess.

Qalifar went to fulfill the obligation. He handled the shard. And direct exposure changed the calculation entirely. The shard’s nature — the way it drained life force, corrupted its bearer, and carried the weight of something that could threaten divine-level powers — made it clear that allowing Entreri to have it was not something he could do. Not as the person he had become.

He stole it instead. He crossed through the Astral Sea carrying it, knowing that Barrabus the Gray was behind him and that the trail would eventually lead somewhere he could not hold it alone. It led to the Copper Piece Gang.

Role in Campaign 3

The party tracked him to a heavily guarded warehouse with Barrabus the Gray already in the picture. Qalifar exploited a technicality — delivering the shard to a location rather than directly to Barrabus’s hand — and vanished into smoke before anyone could decide what to do about him.

What looked like a thief’s escape was something else. He could not carry the shard safely. He could not destroy it. He could not let Entreri have it. The party was already inside the situation. He passed the burden to the only people positioned to do something with it, and disappeared.

The soul coin debts the party accepted from Barrabus — debts that bought their survival in that moment — trace directly back to his choice. They confirmed his reasoning in session 38 and understood what he had done. He appears in the eighth layer by name, offered to Melora when she asked who had affected them. His fate after the handoff remains unknown.

He gave them a shard, a debt, and a problem they are still carrying. Whether that was the most principled thing available to him or simply the best of a set of terrible options is not a question he stayed around to answer.
