History & Role

Vladyn does not make mistakes. That is the first thing the party learned about him, and everything that followed confirmed it. He appeared in a surge of fire and authority in session 41 when Nucky’s parlay call bought the group a moment they desperately needed, and the fact that he answered at all said something. Vladyn is powerful enough that most things in the seventh layer simply do not concern him. The party concerned him.

He had recently seized control of the layer in a coup against Mephistopheles, claiming the sigil of ownership and rule that proved the plane was his. Three archdevils — Mutasafin, Nolknith, and Karanda — still commanded significant loyalty to the old order and refused to accept the transition. Vladyn needed them brought down, and he needed it done in a way that destroyed their credibility so thoroughly that no one would want to follow them afterward. He offered the party that job in the blunt way of someone who considers the conversation already decided.

To make them survivable as assets, he subjected each party member to a controlled infernal death and restoration — brief, horrible, and effective. They came back with resistance to the plane’s killing heat and ash. He also provided gear and a hell centipede as transport, the kind of practical support that made clear he expected results.

He held the Nihil Shard when the party handed it over. Something changed in that moment — a flash of searing light, an obvious exchange of power. Krovuur sensed afterward that the shard now held a different kind of darkness: hatred and vengeance where something else had been before. Vladyn said nothing about what he did. He handed it back and moved on.

The party spent sessions 41 through 47 operating in his layer, playing archdevil factions against each other, running an infernal heist in the City of Brass, and eventually uncovering a conspiracy within Vladyn’s own court — someone feeding intelligence to agents of the eighth layer. When they brought him the evidence, Vladyn listened in silence, rewarded them with writs of passage and protection, and pointed them toward the eighth layer’s hidden entrance.

He got exactly what he needed from the party. Whether they got everything they were owed is a question worth keeping.
