Krovuur came into the story at a turning point. Selganth — the hobgoblin ardent who had fought alongside the gang from the beginning — was gone, and the gap he left was real. Krovuur is not a replacement so much as a continuation: someone who stepped into that space with his own past, his own reasons, and the same fundamental drive toward something greater than the life he was dealt.

He is Shadar-kai, which means he carries within him a closeness to the Shadowfell that most people spend their lives trying to avoid. The Raven Queen’s shadow falls naturally over his kind — over death, transition, and the weight of what is lost. For a time, that resonance was not merely cultural. Something bound him more personally to her domain, some event or devotion that he has not fully spoken of. He has since turned his devotion to Erathis, goddess of civilization, order, and the building of things that last. The shift is real. Whether it was fully voluntary is less clear.

What the Lake of Severed Reflections showed him is this: years ago, after a terrible attack, Krovuur knelt beside a dying boy. The child’s mother begged for reassurance. Krovuur knew the boy could not be saved. He told her otherwise. He offered hope because the grief in front of him was more than he could let stand — not out of cruelty, but out of a compassion that could not find the strength to be honest. The boy died moments later. The mother, given hope rather than time, never said the words she needed to say to her son. She found Krovuur again, years later, and told him what he had taken from her.

His betrayal was not cold. That may be what makes it harder to carry. He lied because he could not bear to be the person who told the truth in that moment, and the cost was borne by someone else entirely. The Lake forced him to stand in that again — not to destroy him, but to show him what he was still carrying and what it had cost.

Whether his turn from the Raven Queen to Erathis was a natural evolution or a step away from something he couldn’t face is a question the campaign has not yet answered. He may not have answered it himself until the Lake made him look.
