After the Shadow Fight
2025-04-11
D&D Session Summary
This session opened with a recap of the shadow fight the party had survived in the memory-realm. The breakdown covered three shadow enemies in detail, including a larger one that had become incorporeal at some point during the battle, making it significantly harder to damage. The group had survived by using the gem’s light as an active weapon rather than just a passive illumination source, and the memory they had drawn on to fuel the gem’s power had played a direct role in driving the enemies back. By the end of that fight, the party was exhausted and aware that the realm was becoming increasingly unstable.
The recap also covered what had happened to Selganth in the aftermath of the Forgotten’s appearance. His sacrifice had been the thing that bought the party the window to escape. The table treated it seriously rather than as a simple combat casualty, and the session spent some time sitting with that weight. Selganth had made a choice, and that choice had consequences both immediate and long-term. Rae’s lost arm was the physical mark of the escape. The liquid shadow flask was the thematic one, and the group was still trying to work out what it meant.
From there, the session turned to the practical aftermath. The party was back in the real world, outside Red Tower, with a gem fully charged by three spirits, one fewer companion, and a significantly different physical situation for Rae. The flask of liquid shadow had a strange resonance whenever Rae held it near the place where his arm had been. The group could not be certain whether it was simply reacting to the wound or whether Selganth had somehow encoded something into the shadow itself during those last moments. Either possibility had implications they were not ready to fully understand yet.
The group returned to Red Tower to recover, resupply, and think. Nucky worked his usual territory in the tavern, partly because that was genuinely productive and partly because the alternative was sitting quietly with grief, which Nucky was constitutionally unsuited for. The rest of the group handled their own recovery in ways appropriate to their characters. Rae spent time with his arm situation, trying to understand the wound and what the shadow-essence flask might eventually do or become.
The town itself had new energy in it, driven partly by the party’s reputation and partly by some new information circulating through the regular adventuring crowd. Several people had returned from the Citadel with fresh stories, and those stories included warnings about a deeper level that appeared to involve some kind of alchemical or industrial process rather than normal dungeon architecture. The spiral staircase the adventurers had found before encountering the ooze problems was apparently well known among the serious dungeon-delvers, and the consensus was that it led somewhere more dangerous than what the party had seen so far.
The party also heard more about Krovuur. This was the session where Krovuur became more fully integrated into the group dynamic rather than just a combat presence. His divine background, the way he engaged with both Erathis and the Raven Queen’s influence, and his own read on what had happened in the memory-realm all started coming through in conversation. The group had not had time to fully absorb a new party member while also dealing with the events of the memory arc, and this session served as a catch-up.
The question of what to do with the fully charged gem also became central. They had three spirits bound inside it, spirits who had helped the party survive and who had trusted them to do something meaningful with what they had gathered. The gem could not simply be carried around as a trophy. It was an artifact with both magical properties and moral weight, and the group needed to make a decision about it before moving into the next phase of the campaign.
Several threads pulled against each other in those discussions. Returning to the Scarlet Citadel remained the most obvious forward path. The stories about the deeper levels were threatening but also very clearly tied to things the party had been following since before the memory-realm detour. The ooze level, the alchemical research, the criminal or political factions using the Citadel, all of that was still waiting. The memory arc had changed the party but not changed the dungeon.
By the end of the session, the group had not committed to a single plan, but they had done the necessary work of absorbing what had just happened, re-establishing connections in Red Tower, and beginning to orient toward whatever came next. The session was quieter than most, deliberately so, and served the campaign well as a breathing point between the emotional weight of the memory arc and the more industrial dangers of the ooze level below.
