The Temple of Blood

D&D Session Summary
This session opened with a recap of the party’s broader mission. After events in Calimport, the group had aligned with Zevron and Qalifar to pursue the Vitriol Fulcrum, whose fortress, the Charhold of Silence, is anchored in the eighth layer of hell. To reach it, the party first had to navigate ancient jump points through the Astral Sea and survive passage through the seventh layer. The shard remained central to the mission, and the group was still dealing with the fallout of the soul coin bargain that had bought their survival.
The first major location in the recap was the Temple of Blood, an abandoned infernal stronghold once used by a powerful devil for plotting and ambition. The place itself wore the party down. Just being there caused pain, headaches, breathing trouble, and a general collapse of confidence. It also preyed on their emotions and trust in one another. Qalifar’s certainty about destroying the shard gave him more focus than the others, while the rest of the group started second-guessing their choices and even turning some of that suspicion inward.
The shard drama escalated inside the Temple of Blood. Under heavy emotional pressure, Nucky persuaded Qalifar to give up the shard, but then refused to carry it himself. Shadra took it instead, accepting the burden along with the emotional corruption that came with it. Once she picked it up, the shard amplified her mistrust, anger, and bitterness, turning those feelings into a quiet but dangerous internal pressure. That transfer set the tone for the rest of the session: everyone was still trying to move forward, but the shard and the environment were actively trying to hollow them out from the inside.
The party then encountered a strange floating woman with a scepter on a bridge, flanked by two smaller floating creatures. She radiated weary contempt and had an immediate supernatural effect on the group, bringing all their worst emotions rushing back. Zarnak tried to charge her and was frozen in place mid-attack. The group reacted with a mix of battlefield control and emergency rescue. Rae threw down a zone, Nucky turned Zarnak invisible and dragged him, and Qual helped pull him to safety. The enemy then transformed into a far more terrifying wind-and-fury form with four arms, a sulfuric stench, and a devastating shockwave attack.
Rather than stand and die, the party fought smart. They pushed the transformed creature away with forced movement powers, bought space, and had Qual rush ahead to open the exit so the group could escape if needed. They succeeded, pulling off a retreat just as the creature was closing back in. That section of the session felt like survival horror with a tactical withdrawal rather than a clean victory. The party did not beat the threat outright. They escaped it.
After that, the group reached another strange realm full of mystical fire and the lingering influence of multiple gods. Instead of relief, the party got hit by another wave of emotional and spiritual pressure. The Vitriol Fulcrum seemed to be feeding on their negativity, and the closer they moved toward her, the more their private resentments and self-doubt took shape. This culminated in shadowy emotional manifestations literally emerging from party members, including a giant cat-like creature from Shadra’s rage and similar constructs tied to the others’ pain and failure.
The party fought these manifestations directly. The creatures were dangerous not just because they hit hard, but because they exploded with damaging force when bloodied and again when destroyed. That made the battle messy and punishing. The group did win, but it sounds like the fight blurred into the general exhaustion and late-night chaos of the session. Even the players jokingly admitted parts of it were a haze afterward. By the end of that sequence, they had pushed through another psychological trial and reached a second portal, though they had not yet fully explored what lay beyond it.
So the big picture of this session was less about treasure or a clean tactical objective and more about attrition, trust, and emotional corrosion. The party kept moving toward hell and toward the Vitriol Fulcrum, but every step of the journey tried to strip away confidence, unity, and judgment. They survived by improvising, pulling each other out of bad situations, and refusing to let the pressure fully turn them against one another.
