Bargaining with Mutasafen

D&D Session Summary
The session opened with a recap of the party’s ongoing fight against hellhounds and devils. During the battle, Mutasafen revealed himself from the fog while the enemies focused heavy pressure on Krovuur. A devil wielding a crackling blue lightning sword unleashed a strange infernal effect that caused mental pressure and briefly turned Krovuur against the party, forcing him to attack Rae in the chaos. The group fought through hellhound bursts, dagger volleys, fire effects, and the lightning devil’s control abilities while trying to stay alive.
Several party members made clutch plays during the fight. Nucky used insults and gold-flinging antics against a hellhound, Zarnak rattled and destroyed one of the hellhounds, Krovuur struck back with radiant attacks and defensive magic, and the party managed to pull Zarnak out of a deadly column of fire. One devil was killed and dissolved into gas. The fight was clearly going badly enough that Krovuur intentionally dropped prone and the group pivoted from win the fight to maybe we should talk before we all die.
That led to a parlay with Mutasafen. Instead of finishing the battle, the party convinced him they could be useful. Mutasafen, who was described as a harsh but just taskmaster, offered them a job: retrieve a powerful gift that had been given to Vladyn, the ruler of the plane. The gift was described as a sigil of power or dominion. The deal appeared binding, with contract-like implications for the whole group, which left everyone physically recovered after a long rest but mentally very aware they were now in deeper than before.
After the fight, most of the session shifted into planning. The party threw around several ideas, ranging from bluffing Vladyn, to counterfeiting the gift, to making fake versions and setting different infernal factions against one another. The main thread that emerged was that a direct fight was probably suicide, so the group needed to think their way out of hell rather than stab their way out of it. The recurring idea became some version of deception, misdirection, and getting enemies to weaken each other.
The party then went to speak with Vladyn and reported that they had encountered one of his apparent followers turned against him: a lightning-sword wielder named Vasago. Vladyn recognized the name immediately and had a visible reaction, though the party could not tell whether it was satisfaction, surprise, or something more calculating. He suggested that Vasago’s involvement might change the situation and showed interest in the party’s emerging scheme to pit multiple sides against one another.
Vladyn then clarified the true nature of the gift. It is a sigil of ownership and rule over the Seventh Layer, a ceremonial and symbolic token granted when he overthrew Mephistopheles. Rather than carrying it personally, Vladyn keeps it stored in an infernal embassy-like vault in the City of Brass, inside a basalt spire called the Ashen Ledger. The place functions less like a treasure room and more like a hell-bank safety deposit vault for contracts, records, and infernal property. Naturally, the group immediately recognized this for what it is: a heist.
Vladyn also explained that the sigil is connected to a powerful contract devil named Choroziel the Red Quill. The party’s next objective is to travel to the City of Brass, find the Ashen Ledger, deal with Choroziel, and either recover the sigil or gather the information needed to prove Vladyn’s rightful claim. By the end of the session, the campaign had clearly shifted from a brutal battlefield survival scene into an infernal intrigue mission with heist energy, contract politics, and a very real chance that every devil involved is trying to outplay every other devil.
