The evening began unremarkably enough — a crowded tavern, cheap ale, and the kind of desperate strangers who end up sitting at the same table because every other seat is taken.

By the end of the night, three men were unconscious, a debt had been settled in the most roundabout way possible, and the party had agreed — against the better judgment of at least two of them — to investigate a merchant’s missing wagon north of town.
