Session 30

The Horse Door and the Trap Gauntlet

2025-10-24

D&D Session Summary

This session began with the party still deep in the Scarlet Citadel and dealing with the aftermath of earlier fights against bats, owlbears, dire badgers, and other dungeon hazards. After a short rest, they pushed down a trapped hallway filled with arrow slits, poison spear traps, and a pit trap. Zarnak triggered the first trap, arrows started flying, and the group had to navigate the corridor carefully while also deciding whether to retreat, charge past the owlbear they already knew about, or investigate the unopened door they had not fully solved yet.

They chose the door.

The party had already collected clues from the surrounding rooms, including a horse head piece and other signs suggesting that the door was some kind of dwarven forge puzzle. Working through the symbols and physical evidence, they figured out that the mechanism responded to a combination of specific actions. Fire had to be applied at the scorched symbol, force had to be delivered like a hammer strike, and the proper piece had to be placed in the slot. With the whole group coordinating, they finally got the door to activate and open.

Inside was a major discovery: a huge golden anvil mounted on a raised pedestal in a chamber guarded by towering dwarven statues in heavy armor. The room also contained dwarven inscriptions, and it was immediately obvious that this was no ordinary workshop. The scale of the anvil alone made it feel ancient, ceremonial, and important. Unfortunately, the statues did not wait around to be admired. They activated and attacked the party almost as soon as the group entered.

The fight started badly. One statue slammed its polearm and threw out a powerful shockwave effect. Zarnak got battered and tossed across the room, and Rae’s attempts to communicate in Dwarven did not exactly help at first. The group quickly realized they were outmatched in a straightforward fight and started looking for a smarter way through. Rae and Nucky combined support, magic, and persuasion to redirect the encounter rather than win it through damage alone.

That plan actually worked.

Rae managed to communicate enough with the animated guardians to reframe the situation. With Nucky backing him up through words and improvised performance, the party convinced the dwarven constructs to focus on the owlbear threat instead. The statues moved off to engage the beast behind the other door, buying the party a narrow window to investigate the chamber and the anvil without being turned into paste by ancient dwarf security systems.

Once the room calmed down for a moment, the party examined the anvil more closely. Rae climbed up and found what looked like a small hammer-shaped depression tied to Volund and ancient dwarven forge imagery. The group understood enough to know they were standing in front of a real artifact, but not enough to safely use it themselves. They were still trying to piece together the inscriptions and the meaning of the forge when the fight beyond the door started going badly for the statues.

That was when Dragos and Zevron arrived.

The two legendary figures appeared through a portal, stepped into the situation like this sort of thing happened every Tuesday, and immediately changed the tone of the whole session. Zevron used a sweeping attack to force back the owlbear and shut the door, while Dragos moved straight to the anvil and read the inscription. Together, they used the forge to create or shape something important, though the party did not fully understand what it was. It was clear, though, that the anvil was tied to something much larger than the current dungeon crawl.

The party wisely did not interfere.

Instead, they took the win, grabbed what trophies and clues they could, and got out. Nucky collected trollkin hands for tavern display purposes, because priorities remain priorities. The group headed up the spiral stairs and out of the Scarlet Citadel, alive and with a much better sense that they had stumbled onto a storyline far bigger than they had realized.

Back in town, the atmosphere had changed. The place was buzzing with excitement because Dragos and Zevron had been there the day before, telling stories in the tavern and asking questions about the Scarlet Citadel. Their visit had basically electrified the whole town. People assumed that if heroes of that caliber were interested in the Citadel, there must be deeper secrets and better treasure down below.

There was also one unsettling rumor in the air: sunsets had been coming earlier than they should for the season. Word had already been sent to larger settlements to see whether anyone else was noticing the same thing. That detail sat in the background like a warning that something broader and stranger might be unfolding beyond the local dungeon itself.

Because one party member was in especially rough shape, the second half of the session turned into a creative healing-focused skill challenge. The group needed to restore serious injuries without relying on a normal long rest or standard healing surge use. To do that, they started building an improvised super-healing remedy from multiple sources.

One character used nature knowledge to track down a rare medicinal plant. Another planned to use thievery to infiltrate a church or sacred site and get access to holy tears gathered from a weeping statue. Arcane power would then be used to transfer or reshape that magical essence into the brew, and divine blessing would be layered on top to supercharge the final result.

So the session ended in a very different place than it began. It started as a trap-filled dungeon run, turned into a discovery of an ancient forge artifact, escalated with a surprise appearance by Dragos and Zevron, and then shifted into a wild town-based healing plan built out of herbs, stolen sacred tears, arcane tampering, and holy blasting.
