Session 31

Nightmares in Red Tower

2025-11-07

D&D Session Summary

This session began with a recap of a very strange night in Red Tower. After emerging from the Scarlet Citadel, the party had gone back into town to recover, help heal Zarnak, and pull off an elaborate healing-tea operation involving rare plants, sacred tears borrowed from a church, tower access gained through clipboard-based lies, and divine energy poured into the brew. The plan actually worked, Zarnak got a major recovery, and the party settled in at the inn for what should have been a well-earned night of sleep.

Instead, everyone got hit with a nightmare assault.

Each party member was attacked in a different dream or psychic scenario built around isolation, fear, corruption, or madness. Nucky was engulfed by a shifting void-like horror from an impossibly dark wardrobe. Rae was dragged down through his bed by fiery claws and cinders. One party member was caught by aggressive living plant matter and a vile pod-creature trying to consume her. Zarnak was overwhelmed by hyper-heightened senses, mold, and creeping filth that seemed to be consuming him at a cellular level. Krovuur was pulled toward gibbering, maddening voices that made him feel as though his mind was slipping away. The message across all of it was the same: alone, each of them was vulnerable, but together they had a chance.

That theme became literal when the individual nightmares began collapsing into a shared dream-space. The party members gradually realized they were in the same surreal realm and that proximity to one another weakened or dismissed some of the dream-creatures hounding them. The session turned into a bizarre cooperative escape and combat sequence as they fought through manifestations including a gibbering mouther, a balor-like threat, a violet fungus horror, and shadowy void-creatures while trying to regroup.

A lot of the action in the dream sequence revolved around movement, rescue, and figuring out the rules of the space. Characters broke grabs, ran for each other, pushed monsters away, used strange powers to warp distance, and discovered that getting close to allies caused specific enemies to disappear. Once the whole group had gathered tightly enough, the dream shifted again and revealed the true threat behind the smaller horrors.

That real enemy was a combined nightmare being made from their fears, anxieties, phobias, and mental pressure. The party found itself in the creature’s lair, where darkness and early-night imagery tied back to strange events happening in the real world. The thing could split into its component horrors and reform, making the fight feel unstable and dreamlike the whole time. Even so, the group managed to bring it down, survive the collapse of the dream-space, and claw its way back out before getting fully consumed by the psychic trap.

The session then jumped forward into the aftermath and transition back to Fallcrest. The group had apparently recovered enough to move on, and once they reached town they found it far more lively and upbeat than before. Their earlier actions had clearly helped. The kobold threat had faded, the unexplained deaths had stopped, commerce was stronger, and the town finally felt like it was breathing easier. The party had done more for Fallcrest than they had fully realized before leaving.

With that calmer atmosphere came time for logistics, rewards, and side errands. The group talked gear upgrades, money, healing supplies, and magic item slots. Rae’s blacksmith contact Thrain came back into focus as someone capable of making experimental armor and weapon upgrades for the party. He was willing to take on custom work, especially for people with unusual equipment needs, and offered to build level-appropriate gear with payment and feedback coming later.

That practical stop also pushed the main story forward. Thrain mentioned that Elara had been looking for the party and that it seemed important. The group split up to track down clues. Rae went to the church and learned that Elara had recently come in for healing more than once, and that her wounds looked like bites, claws, venom, and other injuries caused by unnatural or augmented animals rather than ordinary beasts. He also learned from Geragos that Elara had been asking questions about the Feywild and the relationship between the fey realm and the mortal world.

At the same time, other investigation pointed toward her recent movements. The docks suggested she had been traveling by river and had disappeared for several days. The church contact pointed Rae toward a druid named Torina in the southeastern groves outside town, someone likely to know more about fey crossings and Elara’s state of mind.

Meanwhile, Nucky took a short but spiritually important detour to antagonize an elf-owned tavern. He went in, kicked over a chair, loudly declared his contempt, shouted about bone wine, and left before things escalated into a real fight. Oddly, his sheer bardic confidence made the whole stunt come off less like a crime and more like a memorable nuisance. The tavern owner ended up with a simmering personal hatred for him, which honestly sounds about right.

By the end of the session, the party had done three important things at once. They survived a shared nightmare attack that seemed tied to something larger and stranger than simple bad dreams. They returned to Fallcrest and saw the positive results of their earlier work. And they picked up a clear new lead by learning that Elara’s recent troubles were likely tied to the Feywild, strange beasts, and someone named Torina in the nearby groves. The next phase of the campaign was clearly pulling them away from dungeon cleanup and toward fey mysteries.
